- OVERVIEW
-
- It's great to be able to be notified of inbound e-mail or a
- completed print job via a NetWare message broadcast (i.e., SEND).
-
- However, the NetWare broadcast will stop whatever is currently
- running on your PC until you press Ctrl-Enter. And this usually
- happens when you walk away from your desk for awhile to let a
- report or recompilation finish.
-
- Also, the NetWare broadcasts won't pop-up over graphics modes,
- which can mean that you may not get a message for awhile if you're
- working in a word processor or graphics package that uses the PC
- display in a graphics mode.
-
- CastAway! is designed to overcome both of these limitations, and
- give you a better way of handling NetWare message broadcasts.
-
- At a memory-resident overhead of less than 2-1/2KB, you'll hardly
- even notice that CastAway! is loaded on your PC.
-
- Plus, CastAway! v2 now provides a pop-up interface allowing you to
- send, as well as receive broadcast messages.
-
- Just press the CastAway! hot-key (the default is ALT-C, but this
- is reconfigurable, see the section CHANGING THE DEFAULT HOT KEY
- below), and a menu will be displayed listing all users currently
- logged into your file server. Highlight a user and press Enter
- to send a broadcast message to that user. Or use the F5 Mark key
- to mark several users, then press Enter to send a message to the
- marked users. Supervisor equivalents can also take advantage of
- an undocumented key, Shift+F5 to mark all users.
-
- This .ZIP file includes a 30-day trial version of CastAway!, allowing
- you to try CastAway! for 30 days of actual use before deciding
- whether or not to purchase it.
-
- CastAway! is provided free of charge for customers of Infinite
- Technologies' ExpressIT! Electronic Mail system. Others may purchase
- CastAway! for $99 per file server.
-
-
-
- HOW CASTAWAY! WORKS
-
- If you are not running ExpressIT! Electronic Mail, run the
- EXINSTAL program to serialize CastAway! to your file server.
-
- To install CastAway!, simply type the command CASTAWAY.
- You may wish to consult the section below titled "COMMAND LINE
- PARAMETERS" for information on CastAway! options.
-
- For best results, CastAway! should be loaded after the NetWare
- shell (NETx), and before any other pop-up programs.
-
- When CastAway! receives an inbound message, it will pop-up over
- your current application, make a sound similar to an office phone
- ringing, and display the broadcast message. You can press <Escape>
- to remove the CastAway! display from the screen.
-
- But what if I'm away from my desk?
-
- Well, that's where some of CastAway's advanced features come into
- play.
-
- CastAway! uses several delay timings to control how it displays
- broadcast messages.
-
- If CastAway! detects that you haven't pressed any keys within it's
- "Inactive Delay" period (the default is 120 seconds = 2 minutes),
- CastAway! assumes that you are not currently working on your PC,
- and will not pop-up the broadcast message delay. Instead, it will
- display a flashing symbol in the upper right hand corner of the PC's
- monitor, and make a "phone ringing" sound based on the time specified
- as the "Ring Delay" period (the default is 60 seconds = 1 minute).
-
- While this activity is occurring, your PC keeps executing the program
- that was running...until you press a key on the keyboard. At that
- time, CastAway! will pop-up and display the broadcast message, and
- wait for you to press the <Escape> key.
-
- What if you haven't been away from your desk long enough for the
- "Inactive Delay" to take effect. In that case, CastAway! will pop-up
- and display the broadcast message. However, if CastAway! does not
- receive its <Escape> keypress within the "Wait Delay" period (the
- default is 15 seconds), it will assume that you are not currently
- working on your PC, and will allow your PC to continue executing
- the program that was running before the broadcast message was
- received...until you press a key on the keyboard.
-
- If all that sounds a little confusing...it is...at least to describe.
- In operation, we think you'll find that it works the way that you'd
- like it to!
-
-
- COMMAND-LINE PARAMETERS
-
- CastAway! Supports the following command-line parameters:
-
- /? displays command-line parameter information
-
- /U unloads CastAway! from memory, only if CastAway! was the last
- program loaded into memory.
- /D tells CastAway! to use disk overlays in favor of expanded or
- extended memory.
- /N installs CastAway! entirely in conventional memory, disabling any
- memory swapping.
- /ND tells CastAway! not to use disk overlays.
- /NE tells CastAway! not to use expanded memory.
- /NX tells CastAway! not to use extended memory.
- /NU tells CastAway! not to use upper (high DOS) memory. (640KB - 1MB)
-
- /I=99 where 99 is a value greater than 15 sets the inactive delay.
- If no keys are pressed within this many seconds, CastAway!
- considers the PC to be inactive. (default = 120 seconds)
- /R=99 where 99 is a value greater than 15 sets the ring delay.
- When a broadcast message is pending, CastAway! will wait this
- delay period between rings. (default = 60 seconds)
- /W=99 where 99 is a value greater than 10 sets the wait delay.
- This delay specifies how long a broadcast message will remain
- screen before CastAway! resumes execution of the currently working
- process. (default = 15 seconds)
- /H CastAway! will not pop-up unless the hot-key is pressed.
- /Q disables all audio (sound) notification.
- /S0 enables the default "double pulse" notification.
- /S1 enables the "phone ringing" notification.
- /S2 enables the "standard beep" notification.
- /S3 enables the "phasors" notification.
- /S4 enables the "mystery sound" notification.
-
- /OFF temporarily disables CastAway!
- /ON re-enables CastAway!
-
-
- CHANGING THE DEFAULT HOT-KEY
-
- You can also change CastAway!'s default hot-key of ALT-C via
- the command line with the following command line parameters:
-
- # Tells CastAway! to use <CTRL> instead of <ALT> in the hot-
- key.
-
- % Tells CastAway! to use <CTRL>-<ALT> instead of just <ALT>
- in the hot-key.
-
- & Tells CastAway! to use <CTRL>-<LEFT SHIFT> instead of
- <ALT> in the hot-key.
-
- ! Tells CastAway! to use <ALT>-<LEFT SHIFT> instead of
- <ALT> in the hot-key.
-
- A-Z Any alphabetic character from A to Z can be specified
- to work in conjunction with <ALT> or <CTRL> in the hot-
- key.
-
- Fxx Any function key (F1-F12) can be specified to work in
- conjunction with <ALT> or <CTRL> in the hot-key.
-
- Examples:
-
- CASTAWAY alone defaults to the <ALT>-<C> hot-key, or if
- CastAway! has already been loaded, the hot-key is not changed.
-
- CASTAWAY X tells CastAway! to use <ALT>-<X> as its hot-key.
-
- CASTAWAY #Z tells CastAway! to use <CTRL>-<Z> as its hot-key.
-
- CASTAWAY F12 tells CastAway! to use <ALT>-<F12> as its hot-key.
-
- CASTAWAY %F5 tells CastAway! to use <CTRL>-<ALT>-<F5> as its hot-key.
-
- CASTAWAY &Z tells CastAway! to use <CTRL>-<LEFT SHIFT>-<Z> as its
- hot-key.
-
-
-
-
- COMPATIBILITY CONSIDERATIONS
-
- For best results, CastAway! should be loaded after the NetWare
- shell (NETx), and before any other pop-up programs.
-
- CastAway! may experience problems with some revisions of some
- manufacturer's VGA adapters. If your screen becomes corrupted
- when CastAway! pops up, or after exiting CastAway!, include the
- following statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
-
- SET VGASAVE=OFF
-
- Certain sound effects have been determined to cause occasional
- problems on NetWare non-dedicated servers. If you experience
- any such problems, try loading CastAway! with the /S2, /S3, /S4
- or /Q parameters.
-
-
- ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
-
- CastAway! was written by Brett Warthen.
-
- Brett would like to thank the following people for their assistance
- and inspiration in developing CastAway!:
-
- - Bill Carter, whose NCAST, and numerous discussions about NCAST,
- helped bring about the development of CastAway! It's only too
- bad I had to take so long to get around to this.
-
- - The original "castaways"...the cast and crew of Gilligan's Island,
- for inspiration. "No phone, no lights, no bumper cars...not a
- single luxury...like Robison Crusoe, they're as primitive as can
- be..."

-
- MHS GATEWAYS AND UTILITIES
- --------------------------
-
- * MHS Scheduler - An MHS mail agent that provides greater flexibility
- in configuring when MHS will connect to a host. On a host-by-host
- basis, the MHS administrator can configure different frequencies of
- forced connections based on different times of the day, with
- separate weekday, weekend, and holiday scheduling possible.
- MHS gateways and internetwork connections can also be scheduled.
- The companion RunIT! utility simplifies the creation of batch file
- gateways...now you can run your tape backup system on your MHS
- server.
-
- * PageIT! - An MHS gateway connecting MHS-based electronic mail
- systems to full text alphanumeric pagers. Once configured,
- sending messages to an alphanumeric pager is as simple as
- sending a message from your favorite MHS application.
-
- * ForwardIT! - An MHS mail agent for automatically forwarding
- MHS based electronic mail messages. ForwardIT! can forward
- (or copy) messages addressed to an MHS address to an alternate
- address.
-
- ForwardIT! is most useful in the MHS remote e-mail environment.
- By remote, we refer to field workers or business travelers who
- operate ExpressIT! Remote, or other MHS compatible remote
- software, on a PC or laptop to access their electronic mail
- from a distant location. Examples could include a salesperson
- between sales calls, a business traveler in a hotel room,
- or work-at-home scenarios.
-
- Without ForwardIT!, when mail is sent to a recipient's office
- address, MHS does not allow for a remote user to dial into the
- network and retrieve mail waiting for their office address. Mail
- addressed to this office address can only be picked up at the
- office.
-
- In order to send a message to the user's MHS remote, the sender
- must assume responsibility for sending a copy of the message to
- the remote MHS address.
-
- With ForwardIT!, the user leaves a forwarding address at the
- office, and while they're out, all messages will be forwarded,
- or copied, to their forwarding address, giving users transparent
- access to their electronic mail while away from the office.
-
- This forwarding address can be any valid MHS address, including
- addresses via MHS gateways.
-
- * MhsQ! - An MHS gateway interface to NetWare print queues.
- Messages can be sent via MHS to a NetWare print queue.
- This capability can be useful for MHS remote sites and/or
- MHS enabled applications for generating printed output
- and/or reports.
-
- Sample applications for MhsQ! include generating work orders to
- a printer via MHS.
-
- * MHSNotify! - A TSR which runs on the MHS mail server only, and
- automatically notifies recipients of new electronic mail
- received from remote MHS sites, or across internetwork
- connections. An excellent alternative to MHSALERT for
- DaVinci e-mail users! (MHSNotify! is bundled with ExpressIT!)
